Who We Are

Since 1987, the Redwood Empire Food Bank has been feeding our neighbors in need and leading the community to end hunger. We distribute food through our own programs and our partner organizations in Sonoma, Lake, Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte counties. We work on the front lines of food assistance in our region playing a crucial role in helping individuals, families, seniors, and children.

Description

The Redwood Empire Food Bank has partnered with Farm to Fight Hunger—and we’re looking for volunteers to join us in the fields! You’ll help harvest fresh, delicious produce that goes directly to our neighbors facing food insecurity. The best part? Farm to Fight Hunger donates 100% of what they grow, with a focus on culturally appropriate foods that truly nourish our community.

This is an outdoor, hands-on opportunity—you can expect to get your hands dirty! Volunteers will work in open fields, bending, kneeling, and using pruning shears throughout the shift. You may be harvesting crops such as kale, squash, peppers, tomatillos, and tomatoes during the summer season. Wildlife and farm animals—including chickens and friendly dogs—may also be present on the property.

To learn more about this opportunity, watch our Farm to Fight Hunger Volunteer & Safety Guidelines video.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • All volunteers must be 18 or older

  • All volunteers must be registered for the shift on Galaxy

  • To be fully prepared, we require all volunteers to review our Volunteer Handbook, which covers key details on volunteering with groups/teams, policies, and FAQs.

  • We value respect, fairness, and kindness—negative remarks or harassment will not be tolerated.

  • Tracking your hours? Visit our Verifying Hours page for step-by-step instructions.

What to Know Before You Go:

  • Required:
    • Sturdy, closed-toed shoes (some pathways may be uneven)
    • A hat, layerable clothing, & suncreen (there is no shade in the fields)
    • A personal water bottle

  • Recommended:
    • Gardening gloves and kneeling pad
